Alberta Acts on Climate Change is convening open forums on various communities whereby residents will identify the climate change solutions they believe are appropriate in their communities.
Greg Powell, project coordinator with Alberta Acts on Climate Change, explains the original idea behind the community engagement work. Some plans have changed quite a bit since the video was shot in July 2009.
With guidance from the community in the form of a steering committee, Alberta Acts staff will organize open forum sessions with local residents. During the first open forum, participants will develop a short list of locally appropriate solutions, which may require further research or deliberation. During a second open forum a few weeks later, participants will choose the top one or two solutions and develop plans to implement those solutions.
Over the duration of the project, members of participating communities may get involved as steering committee members, as open forum participants or as members of locally-based implementation teams.
Steering committees in each community consist of residents who represent the diverse interests of that community. The steering committees will guide the goal planning, participant invitation and session design, and will assist in finalizing the plan to implement the preferred climate change solutions that the community has identified.
