Visionary author and lecturer Dr. David Korten will speak on the themes of his most recent book, Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth, which sets forth a framework for an economy designed to bring humans into balance with Earth's biosphere, equitably share the wealth of our common human heritage, and make democracy a living practice. Korten, a former Harvard Business School professor, is known for his clear and unflinching critique of an economic system ruled by global corporations and financial markets and his practical proposals for a future in which economic power is rooted in people and communities of place.

The "Ecological Spirituality & Evolutionary Remembering" activities that I am facilitating and coordinating at Knox United Church and the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area (in and near Calgary this Autumn) will provide you and your family with a few opportunities to gather in community to celebrate the importance and many values of biodiversity in our lives. More details provided below and through the links included in this note.
These gatherings are a time for us to consciously come together in community to honour the species who share this Earthly home with us, as well as those species whose existence on this planet is seriously threatened, and those who have already disappeared.
Let us gather in community to celebrate the gifts that all beings offer through their presence on this amazing planet we call home.

http://www.knoxcentre.ca/
Knox United Church, St. Brigid's of Kildare, the Unitarian Church of Calgary, and Sherpa Dog Reconnections invite you to join us for A Celebration of All Souls!
Our hearts and minds are telling us that the loss of species and critical habitats is a crisis of extreme importance and that we must do something to make things right on behalf of our sister and brother species. To honour the species we have lost join us for An Interfaith Requiem for the Species.
Traditionally, a Requiem or Requiem Mass, also known as Mass for the Dead is celebrated for the repose of the soul or souls of one or more deceased persons. Join us Tuesday, November 2nd, on All Souls Day, for a Requiem honouring the souls of the species lost forever and the ones we might soon lose due to human carelessness, selfishness or ignorance.
You can also find more information about these events (& help spread the word) through the following

About the film
When Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison (Being Caribou), along with their 2-year old son, Zev, and indomitable dog Willow set out to trace the footsteps of one of Canada's most famous writers, Farley Mowat, they mean it literally. Their 5000-kilometre trip – trekking, sailing, portaging and paddling from the prairies to the Maritimes – is captured in this feature-length documentary Finding Farley. They paddle east from Calgary, towards the prairies (the geography of Born Naked and Owls in the Family) and then traverse the same paths that Farley took more than 60 years earlier, which became the foundation for Never Cry Wolf, and People of the Deer. The travelers also get an earful about the long-standing controversy that attends Farley's work. When the family reaches their final destination, Mowat's Nova Scotian summer home, it is, as Karsten says, “An affirmation of what the land and animals had already told us…Stories aren't so much written or created as they are released, expressing what's been there all along.”

As Canadian communities stretch to equip themselves for a rapidly changing world, concerns with food security, food sustainability and food sovereignty are suddenly "on the table". Consumers want assurances that their food is safe.
Shoppers who only a short time ago thought of food as coming from the store increasingly want to know where and how it was produced. There is a growing segment of consumers who now want to feel some sort of "relationship" with the farmer who grew it. Canadians who eat for a living are finally waking up to the fact that farmers are important. Can good public policy be far behind?
Come listen to Canadian Agrologist and farm columnist Wendy Holm talk about why emerging public focus on food is happening "just in time" and what communities can do to support it.

Medicine Hat's Energy Sustainability Department is focused on providing its citizens with energy conservation and renewable energy education, incentives and leadership through a variety of "Hat Smart" initiatives. The mission of the department is to help Medicine Hat reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and position itself to thrive in the post carbon economy.
The speaker strongly believes municipal energy strategies should include energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy, as they will play a critical role in the sustainability of all communities in the 21st century. Leadership from provincial and federal governments is also needed and will ultimately be paramount to the success of such strategies.
Lethbridge and Medicine Hat have been friendly rivals for over a century, often trying to outdo each other, but could it be that Lethbridge is being left in the dust regarding sustainable energy? The speaker will explain the issues and offer his perspective.
Speaker: Russ Smith
Russ Smith is the City of Medicine Hat's Energy Sustainability Manager. He has worked for the City of Medicine Hat for the past fifteen years in a variety of roles with the City including extensive financial and strategic planning within the City's Energy division. Dr. Robert (Bob) Page B.A. (Hons), M.A., PhD
Summary
Copenhagen was not a success and had a very confusing political ending. Yet there are certain lessons for the Alberta Government and the energy industry which emerge. In this seminar Dr. Page will argue that there will likely be a new international process, a reopening of some of the matters agreed to but not in the final statement, and new financial obligations for Canada for 2012. The chaos of Copenhagen should not divert attention from trends underway which Obama and the EU hope to mobilize. Dr. Page will also outline some of the interesting discussions on Carbon Capture & Storage, and important trends to watch for at forthcoming G-8 meetings in Muskoka in the summer and the next COP in Mexico in November.
Biography
Dr. Bob Page is the Chair of the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy, and also the TransAlta Professor of Environment Management and Sustainability at the University of Calgary. He is known nationally and internationally for his work on energy and the environment in areas such as climate change, emissions trading, environmental impact assessment and policy and regulations. As vice-preseident, sustainable development at TransAlta, he was responsible for the corporation's proactive approach to addressing greenhouse gas emission that contribute to global warming and climate change. Bob is a memeber of the environment committee of the National Chamber of Commerce. He is chair of the Board of BIOCAP Canada, has served as a member of the Canadian delegation to negotiate on the Kyoto climate change treaty, and is a member of the Board of the Canadian Water Network and ENMAX Corporation.
