On November 29 and 30, Alberta Acts took the Green Energy Tour to Viking for meetings with town council, local businesspeople, farmers, and ranchers, and with the general public. We presented as part of the Viking Rural Sustainability Demonstration Town Project's educational component.
During the three presentations, we covered:
- Viking and area's technical potential for different types of renewable energy generation;
- The benefits to Viking of community-owned renewable energy generation;
- Opportunities for and benefits of cooperatively-owned renewable energy generation;
- Opportunities for Viking & area's landowners, ranchers, and farmers to generate revenue from renewable energy. On the wind side of these opportunities, the topic is detailed in the Landowners' Guide to Wind Energy;
- A vision for a vibrant, sustainably electric future in Alberta, addressed in Pembina's Greening the Grid work; and
- The prospects of a green energy act in Alberta that could bring exciting opportunities for revitalizing rural communities in Alberta.
The presentations led to vibrant and substantive discussion among the local participants in the Viking tour stop. Each session was unique and exciting in the local contributions, the ideas, and the hope for a vibrant and sustainable Viking.
